Big Walnut Community Trail and Trailhouse

168 S. Vernon Street, Sunbury


Given to the Park District by Walter and Kathy Sandel, this .6 mile surfaced trail in Sunbury follows an old railroad bed from a trestle across Old 3C Highway to Big Walnut Elementary School. The trail provides a walkway for people to enjoy a few pleasant, quiet moments free of traffic to stroll, bike, or cross-county ski. Additionally, the former depot has been converted into an environmental education classroom and office.

Emily Traphagen Preserve

5094 Seldom Seen Road, Powell

This site includes two houses and two barns situated on 72 acres of mixed habitat, including woods, meadows, wetlands, and a pond. One of the barns is currently being utilized as the Park District’s maintenance facility. Open to the public is a one mile loop trail, with a pond overlook, which traverses woods and a meadow, and picnic and restroom facilities. Additional park facility development is planned in the next few years. This site is open to the public from 7:30 a.m. to dusk.

Blues Creek Preserve

9627 Fontanelle Road, Ostrander


The Blues Creek stream corridor defines this gently rolling, peaceful 138.5 acre park that features a variety of habitats, from wetlands, to woods, to grasslands. The park offers nearly three miles of trails, a lovely pedestrian bridge over Blues Creek, and a large picnic area with two shelter houses, composting restrooms, and a tot lot and playground for children up to 12 years old. This park is open to the public from 8:30 a.m. to dusk daily.

Gallant Farm Preserve

2151 Buttermilk Hill Road, Radnor

Gallant Farm Preserve is 254 acres of forest, meadows, wetlands, and the ancient, rocky remains of retreating glaciers. A special feature is the huge, 250 year old bur oak known as “Big Troy.” Phase I of this park’s development is planned to open to the public in the summer of 2004 and will include a shelter house with attached restroom, play equipment, a nature interpretation trail and a small environmental education center for use by the county’s schoolchildren. A visitor center with displays of farm life in the early days of Delaware County will also be developed in a few years.

Char-Mar Ridge Preserve

Acquired in 2000, this is a 128 acre densely wooded site with a large pond located in Genoa Township. Future development will include hiking trails and picnic areas but is several years in the future.

Hogback Ridge Preserve

2656 Hogback Road, Sunbury

A gift from the estate of Mary Barber McCoy in 1998, this preserve features 32 acres of woods surrounded by a beautiful ravine system. Its centerpiece is the approximately 4000 square foot former house, which has been converted to the Park District offices and the Mary Barber McCoy Nature Center. The McCoy Nature Center includes displays, a classroom, and a ‘window on wildlife’ from which to observe the site’s many birds and animals. A one half mile level loop trail through the woods and picnic facilities are also available. Hours are 7:30-4:30 Monday through Friday, 9:00-5:00 Saturday, and 12:00-5:00 Sunday.
